SODA MAKING FAQS
Making homebrewed couldn't be easier. The basic process goes like this:
- Step 1- Brew your soda according to instructions.
- Step 2 - In a glass car, combine your soda brew, sugar, and your Ginger Bug starter.
- Step 3 - Cover the glass jar and set in a dark location to ferment for 24 hours.
- Step 4 - After 24 hours, bottle your soda into glass swing-top homebrew bottles (like these) to capture the bubbles. Allow your soda to ferment for another 12-24 hours before refrigerating. Enjoy cold!
You can enjoy homebrewed soda with as little as 20 mins of prep and 48 hours of fermenting time from start to finish.
Fermentation times can vary depending on room temperature. If your home is kept cooler than 75°F, then it may take slightly longer than 48 hours per batch of soda.
We do not recommend carbonating our sodas with a Soda Stream or other soda machines.
Our Soda Flavor Spices were specifically crafted to be brewed with a Ginger Bug culture. This culture adds a unique flavor and body to our sodas that cannot be duplicated with a soda machine.
Yes, Ginger Bug sodas are non-alcoholic drinks that you can make at home.
Like Kombucha and other fermented drinks, some alcohol is created as a byproduct of the fermentation process; however, the amount produced is very small.
Yes, to make homebrewed soda you'll need a few glass swing-top bottles (like these).
Swing-top bottles help to lock in the fizziness of our sodas and prevent them from going flat.
No!
Whether you love or hate the taste of kombucha, you'll fall in love with our homebrewed sodas.
These sodas taste very different from other fermented drinks. They are are full-bodied, refreshing, with a hint of sweetness.
Thanks to our Ginger Bug starter, you can get all of the benefits of a fermented drink without the sour "fermenty" acidic taste of drinks like Kombucha.
Easy! Just follow the instructions on your Soda Flavor Spice.
In general, our soda spices are brewed on the stovetop for about 20-30 minutes.
Yes. The fermentation process requires sugar in order to create a fizzy soda.
The final sugar content of your soda depends on a variety of factors that we cannot control (such as fermentation time and your home's temperature).
When sugar is added to your Ginger Bug soda brew, the "bugs" in the culture convert the sugar into carbon dioxide and alcohol.
Much of the sugar that gets added to your soda will be converted during the fermentation process.
The longer you allow your soda to ferment, the more sugar will be converted. Likewise, your soda will ferment faster at warmer temperatures and more sugar will be converted.
We recommend starting with 1 cup of cane sugar per 1/2 gallon of soda to create a slightly sweet, fizzy, refreshing soda in just 48 hours.
If you'd like to use less sugar--go for it!
GINGER BUG FAQS
A Ginger Bug is the traditional culture used to make fizzy sodas the old-fashioned way.
A Ginger Bug is a powerful living probiotic culture made from a combination of ginger, sugar, and water which is allowed to ferment over time.
Ginger Bugs are what we use to transform our Soda Flavor Spices into fizzy probiotic-rich drinks.
A Ginger Bug works kind of like a sourdough starter. With each daily feeding of sugar & water, your Ginger Bug starter will grow in size.
As long as you continue to keep your Ginger Bug alive with daily feedings, you can continue to use it to make delicious fizzy sodas.
Just one!
All you need is one Ginger Bug culture to make unlimited sodas.
Your Ginger Bug grows in size with each daily feeding and can live forever with proper care.
To make a batch of soda, you'll only need to use a small amount of your Ginger Bug each time.
Our Ginger Bug is fed a completely organic diet of organic ginger root, organic raw sugar, and filtered water.
A Ginger Bug is a living culture made from gut-friendly lactobacillus bacteria & yeast--kind of like a sourdough starter.
A Ginger Bug is a completely organic culture created via the wild fermentation of raw ginger root. By combining ginger, sugar, and water, these gut-friendly bacteria (or "bugs" as we like to call them) multiply and create a powerful concentrated symbiotic culture.
Our Ginger Bug Starter Kit includes 1 packet of Dehydrated Ginger Bug starter along with instructions on how to activate your Ginger Bug in just a few days.
Our Ginger Bug Starter Kit comes with detailed instructions on how to activate and maintain your starter.
Activation involves feeding your Ginger Bug some ginger, sugar, and water each day until it is and active happy bug.
Your Ginger Bug should be stored in a warm spot in your home (like in a kitchen cabinet for example).
If you are traveling and cannot feed your Ginger Bug everyday, you can store your Ginger Bug in the refrigerator and feed it once per week instead of every day.
Here's how to store your Ginger Bug in the refrigerator:
Step 1: Feed your Ginger Bug.
Step 2: Pour your Ginger Bug into a glass container with an airtight lid.
Step 3: Place your Ginger Bug in your refrigerator in a spot that does not get too cold. For example, avoid the very back of the refrigerator or other locations that may drop below freezing.
Step 4: Feed your Ginger Bug once per week.
To use your Ginger Bug after refrigeration, remove it from the fridge and place it back at room temperature. Remove the airtight lid and replace it with your muslin cloth. Feed your Ginger Bug ginger, sugar, and water for a few days until bubbles return before making soda.
Easy!
To keep your active Ginger Bug alive, simply feed it everyday with a small amount of sugar & water per the instructions in your Ginger Bug Starter Kit.
